Outreach Ministries

Ministry of the Sick and Elderly

Services provided to the sick and elderly of the Parish include weekly home, hospital and nursing home visits. These services are provided by a dedicated group of trained volunteers. The volunteers also arrange for visits by the parish priests for the administration of the Sacraments. Additionally, the Parish has a very active Stephen Ministry program. This program provides training that prepares volunteers to minister on a one-to-one basis to those who are going through a personal crisis. Contact: Sister Carolyn Bouchard, SP  812-482-1805, ext. 111

Health Ministry

Health Ministry integrates faith and health within our faith community as an integral part of the ministry of the Church. Designed to serve the unique health needs of St. Joseph Parish, this ministry promotes physical, emotional, social and spiritual well being. An important part of the ministry, the parish nurse, will coordinate the ministry by developing health education events and periodic health screenings. All members of the parish are invited to volunteer to assist in this ministry of health promotion and health education. For information, contact Jen Verkamp at 812-482-9049 or jennifer.verkamp@gmail.com

Social Concerns Commission

This group brings community and fellowship to our Parish through many different types of service projects, such as: hosting bingo at nursing homes, providing bibs for Baptisms, welcoming new parishioners, and distributing gifts through the Angel Tree project,.  We also host the annual Senior Citizen Banquet, raise awareness about “Respect for Life”, help the Dubois County Community Meals Program and provide  donations as needs arise.

Come join us for fun and fellowship, while helping others.  Meetings are held on the 1st Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in room #203 at the Parish Center or contact Lynn Scheu.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Do you have a special gift, which you would like to share in a special way? If so, this may be the ministry for you! The prayer shawl ministry began with a prayer and fellowship. Knitting/crocheting of shawls and/or lap blankets for the ill was our initial project, but the ministry has evolved into so much more. For example, we do knitted caps for those going through chemotherapy; we sew blankets and crochet mats for the homeless, sew stuffed bears, some of which are sent to Riley Hospital. There are members who make Rosaries for homeless veterans, and with our Annual  St. Joseph Christmas Bazaar, we are always in need of a variety of creative items.

So no matter where your talents may lay, please consider joining our ministry. Meetings are on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in Room 304 at the Parish Center. Meetings are optional, but fellowship is guaranteed! If you prefer to do so, you can do your creating at home and then just drop off your items at the Parish Center. For more information, contact May Kleeman at 812-482-3892 or any ministry member.

The monthly collections are used for the necessities, such as food, shelter and medical expenses. Special fundraising events occur as needed. These special events are a key component of the program. Special needs funds have been used for; the purchase of a vehicle for the sisters and priest, money for teacher education to meet new government requirements, reconstruction and repair of roads, the Church, the schools, meals for the students, security wall for the clinic, church and convent as well as a solar panel system for a first aid tent.

Fr Jonas Gue and sisters from Daughters of Divine Love, oversee the administration of all funds that are received from St. Joseph, Jasper.
