Saint Joseph Catholic Church • Jasper, Indiana

A Parish of the Diocese of Evansville

At this time obviously it is not possible to receive Holy Communion for most Catholics but we can still make what we call a ‘spiritual Communion.’  Saint Thomas Aquinas once defined a Spiritual Communion as ‘an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament during Mass and in lovingly embracing Him as if we had actually received Him.’  Here is one prayer form for Spiritual Communion: ‘Oh Jesus, I turn toward the holy tabernacle where you live hidden for love of me.  I love you, O my God.  I cannot receive you in Holy Communion.  Come, nevertheless, and visit me with your grace.  Come spiritually into my heart.  Purify it.  Sanctify it.  Render it like unto your own.  Amen.’

At this time, we are lifting our parish, community, country and world up in prayer at our private Masses along with the intention for the Mass.  Let us remember the words of Christ: ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, do not rely on your own insight.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths (Proverbs 3:5-6).

God bless, Fr. Eugene
